11 Best Things to Do in AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Nabataean tombs carved into the sandstone at Hegra, AlUla
Hegra, Elephant Rock, Maraya and eight more sights, with what each one costs in 2026.

UNESCO lists 111 monumental tombs at Hegra, AlUla's best-known site, and you can only enter them on a booked tour.

Many visitors reach AlUla with no plan, so they find tours full, taxis scarce and the main sites far apart.

I am Rohail Arshad, founder of Hujjaj Umrah Taxi. My visits to AlUla have been with my family, with friends and on my own.

Every price and time in this guide was checked against Experience AlUla or another named source. It covers 11 sights and what each costs, and it shows how to fit them into a short trip.

Walk Among the Tombs of Hegra

Hegra, also called Madain Salih, is AlUla's top sight. UNESCO calls it the largest conserved Nabataean site south of Petra, and 94 of its tombs have decorated facades. It was also the first World Heritage site in Saudi Arabia, inscribed in 2008.

I did the Hegra Day Tour with my family, and it is the one booking I would not skip. You enter only on a guided tour, and self-driving is not allowed. Coaches leave from Winter Park, and a private Premium Tour runs in a 4x4. Daily tour numbers are limited, so book ahead. Stay on the marked paths and never touch the carvings. The sun is strong out there, so bring sun protection.

Watch Sunset at Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock, or Jabal AlFil, is the best free place in AlUla to watch the sun go down. The sandstone formation stands 52 m high, and the viewing area opens around 4 pm. Parking is free, and food and drinks are sold separately. The rock sits about 20 minutes by car from Old Town, so arrive an hour before sunset and stay for the colors afterward.

Wander Through AlUla Old Town

AlUla Old Town is a maze of mudbrick homes and narrow lanes, and it costs nothing to walk. The guided tour includes areas closed to the public, such as the top of AlUla Fort.

Tours run in the morning and afternoon, with a local storyteller leading in English or Arabic. Late afternoon gives the warmest light on the walls, although the lanes also look good after dark. I walked it alone one afternoon, and the quiet lanes suited that well.

See the Lion Tombs at Dadan

Dadan was a stone city on the incense route. It was the capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite kingdoms, and its lion tombs are carved high into the cliff face.

A small exhibition, Illuminating Discoveries, shows more than 100 artefacts and digital reconstructions. Only tour ticket holders can enter. Dadan is sold together with Jabal Ikmah, and you pick a morning or afternoon slot.

Read the Ancient Inscriptions at Jabal Ikmah

Jabal Ikmah is a canyon covered in writing and rock art left by travelers, merchants and pilgrims over many centuries. UNESCO recognizes it on its Memory of the World Register. You see it on the same tour as Dadan, so it costs nothing extra. A friend and I stayed longer than planned, because the writing covers so much of the canyon.

Visit Maraya, the Mirrored Concert Hall

Guinness World Records names Maraya the largest mirrored building in the world. Its glass skin reflects the desert around it, and the concert hall inside holds 500 seats.

The tour includes Ashar Valley, the coffee shop and parking. Concerts and dinners need a separate booking.

Follow the Oasis Heritage Trail

The Oasis Heritage Trail is a short guided walk through AlUla's palm oasis, with groups capped at 15. Park at Heart of the Oasis Parking, where a shuttle takes you to the start. Water is included. My family took this walk together, and the small group made it easy to ask the guide questions.

Catch the Valley Views From Harrat Viewpoint

Harrat Viewpoint is a free lookout on top of Harrat Uwayrid, a volcanic mountain, at 1,219 m above sea level. It is about 30 minutes by car from Old Town. You look down over the Oasis, Old Town and Dadan.

It is open from 2 pm to 10 pm, and no booking is needed. The site has sofas, fire pits, telescopes and a wood-fired pizzeria.

Fly Over the Desert in a Hot-Air Balloon

A sunrise balloon flight is the priciest thing to do in AlUla. Hotel pickup is included, and the flight passes over Hegra and the AlUla landscape.

Flights depend on weather and can be canceled at the last minute. Book this first and leave a spare day in your plan, since a cancelled flight needs another slot. Guests must be at least 5 years old and 110 cm tall, and they must climb into the basket without help.

Spend a Night Under the Stars at Gharameel

Gharameel is a remote desert area where a guided evening trip combines stargazing with a campfire dinner. You meet at Husaak Adventure Camp and ride a 4x4 over rough ground.

Groups need at least four people and children must be 8 or older, and phone signal may drop out. I booked it with three friends to meet that minimum. The 2026 season is listed until 14 November, so check availability first.

Take the Khaybar Road From Madinah

You can drive from Madinah to AlUla. Arab News gives the distance as about 383 km and the time as 4 to 5 hours, while Experience AlUla says about three hours. Allow for stops either way.

The road passes through Khaybar, with geological landscapes, historic sites and oases along the way. Plan at least one night in AlUla, since a day trip from Madinah leaves little time on the ground.

Best Months for an AlUla Trip

October to March is the best window, with daytime highs of about 15 to 25°C. From May to September, temperatures often pass 40°C, and some experiences pause.

Winter nights can get close to freezing, and Harrat is windy after dark. Pack warm layers for evenings at Harrat, Gharameel and Elephant Rock.

Flights and Local Transport

AlUla has its own airport. Domestic flights come from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, and international ones from Dubai and Doha. Visitors from the US can connect through any of these cities.

On the ground, taxis are scarce, and the airport has only a limited number, served first come, first served. The Darb AlUla app books rides to Old Town and Maraya. Rental desks at the airport include Budget Saudi Arabia, Lumi and Alrehaili. You need a license from your home country and an international driving permit, and buses also run about every 30 minutes in operating hours.

Dress Code and Etiquette

Cover your shoulders and knees in public areas, although foreign women do not need an abaya. At the heritage sites, the ground is rough and exposed, so wear closed-toe shoes and sun protection.

Alcohol is not sold or served. Ask permission before you photograph people, especially women.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days should I spend in AlUla?
Two days cover Hegra, Old Town and Elephant Rock. Three or four days add Dadan, Jabal Ikmah, Maraya and the evening experiences without a rush. Pair one guided tour with one free viewpoint each day, so you are never racing between bookings.
What is AlUla known for?
AlUla is known as a crossroads of ancient civilizations in north-west Saudi Arabia, with a history spanning thousands of years. It is also home to the Sharaan Nature Reserve, where programs protect the Arabian leopard, and it hosts events through the year.
Can Muslims visit AlUla?
Yes. AlUla is open to all visitors, including Muslim travelers, and tours run daily. The religious discussion centers on Hegra, also called Madain Salih, because of its history. Ask a scholar you trust for guidance before you go, and read the next answer for the hadith.
What did Prophet Muhammad say about visiting AlUla?
His words concern Hegra, the home of the people of Thamud, not AlUla as a whole. In Sahih al-Bukhari, he told his companions not to enter the places of people struck by Allah's punishment unless they enter weeping. A Saudi fatwa collection allows a visit only to learn a lesson.
Can you cancel an AlUla tour?
Usually, yes. Experience AlUla refunds most tours up to 3 days before the booked date. You can change a date or time up to one day before, if space allows. Same-day changes and refunds are not offered. Bank card fees are not refundable.
Are the AlUla tours wheelchair friendly?
Some are, but many are not. The Hegra, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah, Old Town and Oasis Heritage Trail tours are not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. The Maraya Tour is. Balloon flights are unsuitable for guests with disabilities, so check each booking page before you pay.
